The seminar provides first access to European integration and familiarises its students with the most important integration theories (bloc 1: theories) in order to explain supranationalism, intergovernmentalism and Europeanisation. The second bloc (institutions) introduces the students to the EU political system and shows how the institutions reflect the competing paradigms. Following an overview of the EU multi-level system, the Commission, the Parliament, the Council, the European Council, the Central Bank, the Court and advisory bodies will be addressed in more detail. The third bloc (policies) introduces the students to EU policy-making at the example of three policy areas: Common Market, Common Foreign and Security Policy, and European Monetary Union. Afterwards, the seminar turns to current challenges: Considering the recent multiple crises, it will address the question, whether crises are a driver of EU integration or how they affect the European Union. With regard to increasing Europescepticism, the students further discuss whether the EU faces a legitimacy crisis. Based on both analyses, the seminar will introduce the students to the ongoing reform debate on the EU level. 2-6 LP
