Understanding the German academic system is a key to successfully accomplishing a PhD and to collaborate with others at a German university. Ignoring this issue usually leads to lots of challenges and misunderstandings in the common work between supervisors, colleagues and students due to different experiences and perceptions of teaching, learning and communication. Understanding German academic traditions, scientific working culture and related expectations between supervisors, colleagues and students can reduce available tensions in scientific collaboration and reduce misunderstandings.
